Dr. John L. Wooten—at the time the only orthopaedic surgeon in the area—founded Eastern Orthopaedic Group in 1955. Practicing from a house on Greene St. in downtown Greenville, he performed surgeries in the old red brick hospital which now houses the Pitt County Administrative Offices. In 1961 the practice moved to the site of the current Medical Pavilion on Fifth Street. In 1965, Dr. James Bowman joined the practice. As the Greenville area grew, Drs. Sellers Crisp and Gene Hamilton joined the practice.
In 1975, Dr. Bowman left and founded Pitt Orthopedic Service. Dr. Randolph Williams joined Dr. Bowman in 1976. Pitt Orthopedic Service grew in the ensuing years, adding Drs. Denis McGillicuddy, Bruce Wilhelmsen, James Harvell Jr., Chris Barsanti, and Phil Perdue. Eastern Orthopaedic also continued growing; the practice added Drs. Ed Bartlett, S. Lamont Wooten, Tally Lassiter Jr., and Deanna Boyette.
The two groups, Eastern Orthopaedic Group and Pitt Orthopedic Service, worked side by side over the years as Pitt County Memorial Hospital evolved into the present day University Health Systems of Eastern North Carolina. It became clear that they could better serve their patients by merging their practices. So, on March 1, 1999, the two joined forces to create Orthopaedics East & Sports Medicine Center. The merger has enabled greater sub-specialization and meant greater expertise across the complete range of orthopaedic care—especially in dealing with complicated musculoskeletal problems. It has also made it possible to provide the newest treatments and technologies in orthopaedics for the benefit of people all across eastern North Carolina.
